Resolutions of the Everyday Photographer | 2015

As a professional photographer, I understand the value of photography. I get to capture so many special moments and signs of love. Pictures are a way of storytelling.; they freeze a moment in time forever so we can feel those feelings again and again. So yes, I love photography.

However, you all should too! You don’t need to be a professional or have fancy gear to incorporate photography in your life. Here are some New Year’s Resolutions for the photographer in all of us.

Take pictures!

The best camera is the one you have with you. Everyone nowadays has a camera in his/her pocket. That is the beauty of a smart phone. Use it! Take pictures of your dog, your kids, your significant other, but also the silly little things like breakfast, or your shoes. The possibilities are endless! Don’t worry about perfection.

So many opportunities can be missed if you try to make the photo perfect. The magic of photography is that it can capture the feeling of the moment. Your hair is in your face… don’t worry about it! Maybe your picture comes out a little blurry because your laughing. Love the moment!!  You’ll look back someday and feel the emotions, forgetting about all the technical stuff. A good picture is about the memory it brings back to you.

Your pocket camera is great, but when you are the one always behind the camera there won’t be any images with you in them! Make the time to get portraits done where someone else is in charge. A professional will be able to show your best self and the relationship between you and your loved ones. It is worth the time and money. Place a value on having those memories of your family, your friends, and yourself.

Use your images!

Many of us have our pictures just sitting on our computer or phone. Make sure to display your pictures. Frames are typical, but get creative. I love scrapbooking so I usually choose that method, but wall displays and photo books are great options too. Professional photographers offer products for printing your images. You should definitely take advantage of that! We use amazing print labs and have an artistic eye for the best way to display your pictures. I offer some unique products for my clients because I want to give them something that they will treasure and can’t get anywhere else.

 Organize and review.

When you import digital images, be sure to name your files consistently so they are easier to find. Go through them frequently. You’ll never know what gems you might find that you weren’t looking for the first time through. I am a huge fan of this one! I love going through my images, especially at the end of a month or year to look back on all that has happened.
